New Zealand Winegrowers Grafted Grapevine Standard

At Stanmore Farm we have always had the goal of producing vines of the highest health and until now have maintained accreditation under a variety of self imposed schemes and regimes because there was a lack of a common set of national standards.

We fully appreciate that for the industry to achieve high health vines it all starts at the  nursery, so we are enthusiastic about working with a standard developed and updated in New Zealand for our own industry.

The GGS was developed by the New Zealand Winegrowers Board with the aim of minimising the risk of grapevine leaf roll virus type 3 (GLRaV-3) being present in grafted grapevines.  At the same time the standard requires trueness to type traceability, high physical specifications and related management systems.

In practical terms to achieve certification of all of the nursery’s rootstock and scion mother vines we had these reviewed by American Ampelographer Lucie Morton.

In addition we have been implementing a comprehensive system of tracking and traceability over the last few seasons.  This is essential considering the numerous combinations of rootstock and scions we graft and offer for sale.

Certification also requires physical plant specifications covering root length, graft strength and top growth and this is all overlaid with management and technical control systems.

If you would like to learn more about GGS there is a lot of information on NZ Wine’s excellent website or you can contact Kate.
